Forty years ago a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin came up with an idea to make politicians and citizens of the nation pay attention to the preservation of the earth – that idea was Earth Day. In 1970, 20 million Americans took part in rallies and protests that led to the creation of the Environmetal Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts. Twenty years later in 1990, 200 million people in 141 countries came together on behalf of our planet. The power of the internet was demonstrated when Earth Day 2000 joined 5000 environmental groups in 184 countries and a group numbering in the hundreds of thousands gathered at the National Mall in Washington. Currently more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities world-wide.
Sonoma County will host its own share of Earth Day activities. One of the special events is Green Valley Goes Blue. On April 18, 2010 Iron Horse Vineyards in the Russian River Valley sub-appellation of Green Valley will host food, wines from Green Valley wineries, music, an eco-exhibit, a presentation from a National Geographic underwater explorer and marine biologist, and more.
In this fourth year of Green Valley Earth Day events, the focus is on ocean conservation. Proceeds will benefit the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program and National Geographic Ocean Now.
